What type of speedo is it, Smiths chronometric (clockwork) or magnetic (modern) ?
If it is the chronometric, there should be a small shaft at the back with a hole through it where an extension with a knob on it is fitted. If you pull on this springloaded shaft and turn it, it will reset the odo.

the photo is of a chronometric speedo which is the sort fitted to G3LS to about 1954 or 55.The knob at the back is the trip return. After this they mounted the speedo in the headlight and the trip return came out of the bottom with an extension cable and knob so you can get at it. The extension may be missing or the shaft may have been broken or cut off (a regular occurence ). If asking questions its best to give us the date of the bike as well as the model number.

No hole for a trip knob anywhere, no sign of anything to do with it underneath either, maybe the wrong one, never mind, a little mental arithmetic never hurt whilst riding a fine motorcycle..

Looks like a 55 long headlamp. The trip will be underneath on the right hand side. It should have an about 3" long stem with a knob on the end. So it can be reached easily. If the stem is missing, look for a little round peg pocking out the bottom. It will have a small hole in it to fix the 3" stem/knob on with a clevis pin. You can make your own 3" stem/knob with a bit of curtain wire. You may have to open up the bore a bit on the curtain wire. Turn it with pliers as you fit it. Screw a curtain eye in the other end to act as a knob. Paint the white plastic wire sheaf etc. black. It cannot be seen very easy painted black. I actually used a little screw in knob I found used as a foot on a small case. It looks like the real thing. Been on now for 30 years.

Thanks, no peg sticking out, just a hole which is flush with bottom of speedo, will something a suitable size inserted connect with something inside and turn it ? or is it a speedo out of headlight job, or just leave it...
