Re assurance needed

Post by bob »

Hi
1960 M31
Getting the bike looked at ready for some decent weather .
I find .
I have an oil leak from the bottom of one front fork
Am I OK to just remove Bolt 010697 ( Fixing Damper tube to slider ) replace the fibre washer and refit .
or will this loosen something inside and cause problems on refitting .
Not had forks apart before . and looking at the parts breakdown its not just a drain plug that I thought it was .
Thanks
Bob

Hi

If you're lucky what you propose will work. If you're unlucky the damper tube assembly will spin as you try to torque up the bolt.

If the latter happens you can apply gentle side pressure to the damper tube by threading a bolt into the drain plug hole - be very careful not to strip the drain plug thread.

I was fortunate when I re-built my forks, both sides tightened up without having to lock the damper tubes - hope you have the same luck.

The toolbox lid screw is the same thread as the fork drain plug.
