Engine numbers

Post by Afin »

Hi All,

I'm trying to sort out a registration document problem. Can an AJS and Matchless single engines from the fifties have same serial numbers? Like 52 18S 21352 / 52 G80S 21352

Best,
Antti

As Alan has stated, no, it's not possible for both AJS and Matchless to share the same number.

But they will have different prefix/ suffix year/model ??? Frames also, with different prefix or suffix. Prewar Matchless for some years had a number series for each model type, Wolverhampton AJS never did this, so you know year and model from every number 1912 to 1932.

The question was (Like 52 18S 21352 / 52 G80S 21352) so the answer would be yes.

Well I'll be the first to eat humble pie, I cannot believe the factory would do that but I'm now even more knowledgeable.

Me too, also makes Glass check books in error, as each year, each marque/model, does not always start with the same number, the same year.
