Lucas control box 033018A of 033010A L32

Post by rudelan_LAPSED »

Hello,
My 1955 G3LS should be equipped with an MCR2 control box. When buying my bike, another control box was attached to the side of the frame near the battery.
We can read on the cover 033018A or 033010A (not easy ..) then 6 MCRI L32
She does not fit my bike. But for what Matchless or AJS?
An indication maybe, the inside of the top cover is green (military?)

Rip the insides out and chuck a DVR2 in it.

Buy the equalivent from the club far more reliable with a decent after sales service. The DVR 2 works fine but when it goes wrong you just have to throw it away, as there is not after sales service . This has been my experience with 3 out of four that failed.

I had a Lucas regulator like yours on my '54 G80 over 40 years ago. I took a piece of alloy tube from the scrap box, the right diameter to fit in the regulator mounting clamp, squeezed one end in a vice, drilled it 1/4 inch and mounted it on the fastening bolt inside one of the toolboxes. The regulator was mounted on this makeshift bracket, it worked well and did not show on the outside, so no-one ever knew! Of course, back then we were only interested in keeping the bikes going as cheaply as possible, originality was very much secondary. Andy

Ruddy,

To partly answer your question, MCR1 regulators similar to your 33018A were used on AJS/M singles in combination with an E3AR dynamo until 1950. The Lucas catalogue 1936-1957 lists 33018A for these singles though the AJS/M spares lists say 35106A-L31. Number 35106A appears nowhere in the catalogue.
