G3 outer gearbox cover

Spurred on by another post elsewhere on a different but thought provoking subject, I'm curious to know what we aim to achieve when assembling the cover with the pawl/ratchet in a certain position.

Don't think I got it right last time and have more neutrals now.........

The pic in the manual referencing 2nd gear means nothing to me.

That would be AMC. Sorry, I didn't think to state that. Been on here long enough to know better.

U mean when u align the dots on the wee pinion and the cam plate gear?

I used some guides from the archives by Mick Hemmings and Roy Oliver when I rebuilt my AMC 'box and everything worked fine afterwards.

Not sure how to display a pic from the manual, page 66 fig 18, of the F Neil manual, but it shows the pawl and quadrant positions prior to assembly.

As I say above, I don't know what the pic is trying to say, and what I should be doing to fit the cover with the pawl and quadrant correctly aligned.

I interpret the manual thus:

The critical step when assembling the gearbox is the relationship between the cam plate, item 26, and the quadrant, item 31. If the relationship is incorrect you will have poor engagement, missing gears, false neutrals.

The relationship between the quadrant and cam plate will have a direct influence on the position of the gear change quadrant, item 50.

Illustration 18 demonstrates the relationship between the gear change quadrant and pawl when second gear is selected on the cam plate - if your box does not conform you have probably mis-meshed the cam plate and quadrant.

Thanks for the replies gents. The old grey matter is beginning to get to grips with what is supposed to happen......and in my case I don't think it did.

Curious, cos most of the time all seems well as it was before strip down, then a cluster of falsies of all types appears out of nowhere. Can now appreciate having the gear indicator, I'd be buggered at times without it.

I'll live with the situation for now as long it's not causing undue wear, and add it to the short list of jobs to do along with engine rattles and disappearing oil.
