How did the VMCC run go?

Regards,

Steve
Hi Steve,,

The run went very well, lovely weather, and beautiful rarely frequented roads. By the time I got home I'd done knocking on the door of a hundred miles. Only problem was my inner thighs were ***king sore through lack of motorcycling over the last 4 months, back to the gym for more leg exercise then?

Hope you get your bike sorted soon.

regards,

Neil

Interesting. Sounds RPM, not load related (i.e. it's not the bottom end), though as you say it only does it when the engine is under light load. Very pronounced though. Valve gear? Though the frequency sounds wrong. It's more like piston speed.
Could be something loose somewhere, rather than anything in the engine. Broken head steady?

;) Sounds like tappet rattle to me. Could be complaining about travelling down the wrong side of the road!

spookefoote,

I'm driving on the right side, it's you that's going the wrong way. :D :D

Pretty sure there's nothing loose causing it, checked everything when I reassembled after taking the head off last year to fix pushrod tube leaks.

I've listened to the video several times, used the stethoscope and me ears. I dunno, it could easily be valve springs as Clive suggested. Thing is, she starts and runs really well and seems to have plenty of power (sic), so I'm reluctant to mess with it.

Maybe it's just general wear. I think engine is all original, certainly the cylinder is std bore as I measured it when the head was off. Only recently set rocker clearances, on the loose side admittedly though rattle was there to a degree previously.

Think I'll monitor it as with the oil use and see how it goes. Hopefully not ‘Bang'.

Thanks all for the comments, I'll be back if something changes.

Look on the bright side. If it goes 'bang' you'll find out what was causing the rattle. Probably.

I had a very similar "clicking" from the top of my M16, till the exhaust valve stuck. Turned out to be a slightly tight valve in the guide, so we think it was sticking slightly on closure. It eventually gummed up after 500 miles and I lost compression. Cleaned it all up and got it reamed out and has been fine since (300 miles) and the "ticking" has gone.
