Stuart before going off on one, perhaps you should think about time differences. Your first post came at 7pm on a Saturday night in the UK and your comment of "bugger all help" came at 3am on Sunday morning. As for sourcing CS pistons they don't grow on trees in the UK.
Just telling it as it is

Plus one regarding the article. Thanks Spriddler, an interesting read.Braaap wrote:Great resource thank u Spriddler.
To answer TriumphLegend... the original CS flywheels are steel. But what steel?
That aside... your observations re materials, finishes and fits is bang on. Thanks.
All the ducks are starting to line up.
Giving thought to getting 2 x 30mm thick slices of 200mm 4340 round bar...
Braap, 4340 equivalent to UK spec EN24. looks to be a good choice.
As a side note: I'm pretty sure that I have seen flywheels advertised. I think it was from an Australian company making them. They look very pretty.
They appear to be using EN26. Seems a bit OTT to me for the flywheels. I would stay with the 24.
Have a look in the jampot on line pictures\competition machines. There are a couple of pictures of made up cranks as well as a picture of a snapped big end.
Big end pin busted.
This happened to me once: The cause was an Alpha one piece big end bearing /crank pin. Later big end assembly uses a tough inner pin with a separate harder bearing race. This avoids the step changes of pin diameter and the need of one material grade trying to perform two different requirements.

Re: Making G80CS flywheels
The Aussie Wolf flywheels are marked EN26.
Nice bit of kit. CNC'd.
I was able to measure them and the used originals.
Slight differences. Including slightly narrower, (lighter), in th case of the Wolf.
