Ooh; the new AJS 400 goes on show for the first time...

Post by lawrence »

If you're at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed next week pop along and see AJS on stand 132. It will be there....

Who's going to take some photos and write it up for the Jampot?

Does " new " AJS, mean a brand new AJS?

Yes Rob. It is reported to be an AJS Cadwell using the Kawasaki W400 twin engine.

Not altogether sure I can get excited about a 12 year old, 400cc engine being dumped into a 125cc frame that's been around for years as well. Can't they do just a little better than that?
I'm from the Fens.... Gimme six.

If the information I was told last years was correct, it won't be in a 125 frame as the engine would be too big to fit.

It was first mooted 2 yrs ago and was said to have 'AJS Cadwell' styling, not necessarily the Cadwell 125 frame.

If it has a w400 engine it will be a good motor, it has to be a better bet than the mash/jawa/swm singles, or maybe not, I do like a single...

According to t'internet the twin cylinder 400 engine was introduced in Japan in 2006 Unlike AMC who uprated a 500 twin to 600 then to 650cc Kawasaki changed the crankshaft and conrods and converted the 650's 72 x 83mm bore and stroke to a 500 engine with the same bore but a stroke of just 49mm. Torque dropped from a respectable 57.2Nm (42.2ft-lb) at 5600rpm to a still healthy but lower 29Nm (21.4ft-lb) at 6000rpm.

well I Have owned many Kawasakis over the years and Im using a 17 year old GPZ500s to commute on (13000 miles and counting) and I can attest to them making superb over engineered machines.. so it wont be let down by the motor.. and the WL is a great engine as well.. so if it looks good it might sell... - Im of an age where low capacity light bikes with a bit of <classic> style could be just what Im after... and yes I love AMC and odd old italian bikes as well.. what they should do is a classic trials 250 with a gpz250 engine - it would sell like hot cakes with a black tank on it...
