Bike trailer tyre pressures?

Post by SPRIDDLER »

It's that time of year when pals want to borrow my trailer. (I always ride, obviously).
I've searched t'internet and had confusing results for single bike trailer tyre pressure with a 160kg bike - everywhere from 32 to 90 psi.
As well as premature/uneven tyre wear, if they are too hard it'll bounce around; too soft and there's a risk of the tyre-to-rim seal failing.

Tyres are marked:
4.00 x 8"
Nylon cord tubeless
2 ply sidewall
Range B
265kg per tyre
Max 50 psi

What pressure do others use or is it case of 'kick 'em and forget'?

I have always used 30/32. on all my trailers. 8" wheel barrow or 10" mini type wheels. Don't know where I got that from now as I've been doing that for decades.

I like mine more on the softer side, 18 to 20, makes the ride much smoother.

Ta for the info. I've gone with 35 on the bike trailer.
My HiTec pre-settable 12v pump wasn't always near a cigar lighter socket but I do have a spare 12v battery in the shed so having bought a cigar lighter socket for next to nothing from China I added a couple of croc clips and can now check all my tyres in my drive with ease.
So that's what I was doing all morning and now I'm knackered from all the grovelling around, especially under the caravan and m/home
I was surprised to find that there were twenty seven tyres in all........ :o

Caravan - 4
Motorhome - 5
Boat trailer - 3
Launching trolley - 3
2 x motorbikes - 4
Bike trailer - 3
Car - 5
(I don't have a wheelbarrow, Rob).

Mustn't grumble though as one day there'll only be the four on the mobility scooter.

My trailer has Mini wheels with 8ply trailer tyres and I use 35 lbs so that the trailer does not bounce too much when empty. I think that 35 lbs would be about right with 2 ply tyres, any more and the trailer would bounce specially when empty.A lower pressure could mean the tyres overheating when loaded. My 4 wheeled car trailer with Mini wheels needs 50 lbs in the tyres. It is important to keep below the maximum allowed weight marked on the tyre.

With three cars, three bikes a caravan and a trailer ( not to mention the pushbike ) I don't know how I ever managed before without my compressor. It has to be the best and most used present I have ever had. Plus, useful for cleaning air and oilways etc. on the bikes. I have recently suffered a couple of slow punctures on the car too, and as always the case, been lazy in fixing them and simply use the c'sor. The local garage now charges 50p per use. :D :D

I remove the lighter plug on mine and substitute a couple of crocodile clips, and yes you wouldn't believe just how handy that little gadget can be. I even used it on the new Velo's Dowty's kind regards
