Speedometer drive question.

Post by Pharisee »

If you look at the end of the drive cable that connects to the chronometric speedometer, which direction should the inner cable rotate when the rear wheel is turned forward (driving direction)... clockwise or anti-clockwise?
Thanks
John

Looked at from above at the Speedo end the cable should rotate clockwise. However if you any applying a cable from below driven by a drill it needs to have the reversing facility engaged. ( looked at from above it will then be turning clockwise )

Thanks... The inner cable rotates in the same direction as the speedometer needle so I thought it was probably OK. The G3 is being re-built from various boxes of bits that I bought a while back and I'm not sure the rear wheel drive gearbox is the correct one. The cable drive is above the wheel spindle which make for an awkward drive cable routing.

Mine is like that and performs OK.
Chemists do it with test tubes

Route the cable along the bottom then up by the front down tube.

That drive box looks to be an original smiths item correct for an early fifties bike. Especially if the bit I cannot see at the other end of the drive is flat and not torpedo shaped.
