Clutch cable
Can anyone tell me the correct outer & inner length of the clutch cable for a 57 G9 please? every time I knock one up I seem to get the inner too long or the outer too short.
Many thanks in advance, John

Re: Clutch cable
best way i've found is to make and fit gearbox end then fit the clutch lever end in situ . never fails . put adjuster, in gearbox , two thirds in .

You will find many cable length's here; http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Spares_l ... ements.pdf
Go to page 90 onwards on the PDF file page number. Cable section. There are a few in the updates section's you will find at the start of the file.

Re: Clutch cable
I notice your bike is 57, the file I referred to is up to 54, I combined it with a couple of updates. I assume on checking part numbers, you can discover parts that were still used beyond the file date. The file is handy for discovering dimensions not given in later parts lists.

Re: Clutch cable
Why make up your own cables? There are very high quality parts readily available.
For the best quality cables I use J&J Cables. I believe these are available direct from the manufacturer or off the shelf from Steve Surbey, AMC Classic Spares.

I have found these cables to be of the very best quality and the company also produce longer variants for bikes fitted with higher handle bars. Also the manufacture of the adjusters fitted onto these cables is of a very high quality.

why bother making your own cables . why bother to do a restoration when you can buy one already restored . why bother with an old bike when you can have a new one .Triumph-Legend wrote:Why make up your own cables? There are very high quality parts readily available.

Re: Clutch cable
I don't use them anymore, pity as the cables from them were good. My last order was cancelled by them, plus I received a lot of abuse. Unbelievable, if I replied back all I got was an even more abusive reply. My order was for 20 pre war speedo cables. It was refused because the cables were for owners of AJS motor cycles. I ended up getting the cables made and delivered in 2 weeks from New Zealand. The cost with postage was cheaper than JJ. The cables were good, also modified so only a new inner wire could be used, if it was only that wire that was broken. This enabled the special machined gear box end fitting to be reused.

Re: Clutch cable
My understanding is that J&J are unwilling to supply the owners club because of some upset in the past. Speaking from my own experience, I have always received very good, polite and helpful service from J&J. However their cables are available from Steve at AMC Classic spares, usually off the shelf.Rob Harknett wrote:I don't use them anymore, pity as the cables from them were good. I'm pretty sure this is a quote from Marvin in the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I don't object to anybody making their own cables, done it myself countless times over many years. That is why I made the comment. The made up cables of excellent quality are readily available freeing up more time for those far more interesting / challenging restoration jobs. Some restorers like to rebuild their own magneto's and dynamo's while others send them off to a specialist that restores these items, these restorers having far greater experience, spares readily available and any specialist tools or test equipment. If you want to make your own cables fine, go for it. It is a worthwhile skill to have. Others may prefer to buy ready made cables, providing that the parts that they are buying are a quality part with correct adjusters, length etc. That's why I use J&J or Steve rather than any other source. I'm quite sure that J&J would be happy to provide you with the required parts for you to make up you own cables if that is your preference.

Re: Clutch cable
The JJ cables feud dates back to when club spares first started. They started it, so only they could end it. They even choose to escalate it by refusing my personal order for speedo cables. Which was nothing to do with the club, I was to pay and sell at cost price to pre war bike owners. Those owners club members, VMCC members, e - group members. Not solely for club members. In spite of telling them all this, they still refused my order. They lost an unpaid sales man in refusing and abusing.
