GB Gearbox

Hi, I have a GB gearbox numbered GB23 J53. This appears to be a perfectly standard series for a 53 bike, but the mounting holes are for 1/2" bolts instead of 7/16". Does anybody know if another application (Ariel etc) used 1/2" bolts, or is it simply that somebody has drilled them out for some ancient reason ?
