Re: 40 year old mot exemption
Whereabouts on the gov website are you looking?
I think you've got it wrong. See this page. https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles
40 years for nil tax, pre-1960 for no MOT requirement. Of course, the vehicle must still be roadworthy.
Edits: Bad memory and errant typing digits.

No not if they go to 40 years old, which may make 1977 a rolling date.crackon wrote:Will 1960 be a rolling date I wonder?

This a paragraph out of the government response to the consultation as the link https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... hiness.pdf
32. We will introduce secondary legislation to enact these changes as soon as possible. The changes will come into effect from 20 May 2018. We will discuss with stakeholders the precise formulation of the guidance on substantial change and this will be published once the legislative phase is completed.

I do also get mine done but every other year as I think with the mileage I do that's all it really warrants.
as an experienced engineer/technician all my bikes a checked regular enough when cleaning and before rides.

Re: 40 year old mot exemption
This consultation paper is good news folks - the EU directive has been feared by groups like the FBHVC (to which our club is affiliated) but the proposals seem very sensible. You can still MOT your vehicle if you wish and no mileage limit is proposed thank goodness - it would have been a major restriction and a bureaucratic nightmare.
However, the guiding principles to determine substantial modification is yet to be fleshed out and could be a problem if you have to change an engine, for example, as it is a major component.
So, lets keep the faith and hope it all becomes law in the form suggested here. The FBHVC news I post under Secretary's Scribblings (as long as I keep doing it) should keep us up to date.

Re: 40 year old mot exemption
We do already have mileage restrictions, which may go unnoticed. My car insurance states mileage 10K a year, so if it looks like you may go over that, you need to notify your insurance and of cause pay up more money. Once average was considered 12K a year.
