Reg plate on front mudguard?
My G12 doesn't have one. I'm curious to know if it would have had one originally and it was removed as part of a later restoration, or whether it left the factory without.
My G12 left Plumstead in December 1960 and was registered in January 1961. Can anyone advise?
Thanks
Geoff

Yes it would have had a front number plate when new.

I think like my 1961 G12 the front plates were stick on ones either side of the rounded front mudguard rather than the stand up 'people slicer' ones on posts on top of the guard.

Thanks for the replies....two differing answers. I've never considered it before, but was there a legal requirement and if so when did it cease?

Re: Reg plate on front mudguard?
As I recall getting a new bike that came without a number plate on the front in 1975 I think they were illegal to fit and sell on NEW bikes after late 74 or early 75. (edited later)-You can fit your own front plate up to 2001 No doubt someone will come along and either blow it out the water or confirm

The DVLA site says that bikes registered before the 01 09 2001 can display a front number plate but don't have to, so you are allowed to fit them up to September 2001.

Top tip - if it needs more than 2 bolts to hold it on, its probably important...

Re: Reg plate on front mudguard?
Most old bikes had the bacon slicer, until the deep section front guard arrived. So it depends on year and model, as to where the front number was and still can be displayed. As seen here on 1959 models.

Re: Reg plate on front mudguard?
Thanks for all the replies. Did some googling (I must get out more!) and it appears that 1975 was the year the law changed and it actually became illegal to have a front number of any kind on bikes post 2001.
Regarding my Matchless, more googling reveals very few images of this model with a 'pedestrian slicer'. I was thinking of fitting one if it was authentic but it appears that it would not have been.
Cheers

Re: Reg plate on front mudguard?
The original reason for the upright front number plate( at the beginning of the 20th century) was that the law insisted that the plate should be illuminated at night by the front light. Round about 1974 or 5 some body realised that the pedestrian slicer plates were really not such a good idea, so the law was changed.Paul
