"Edith" was obviously running too weak a mixture from day one, the carb to my surprise is a new monobloc. I've increased the main jet (in stages) from a 260 to a 280 and the pilot jet from 30 to 35. It now runs beautifully pulling hard and smoothly from low revs and revs freely when required. She was still accelerating at 60 mph when I decided that's enough for an engine with only 500 miles from a rebuild.
Then it rained. Best I start learning all about N1 magnetos then.

Make sure the end cap is set so the little hole is at the bottom and run a little silicone sealant around the point where the advance retard cable enters the rubber shroud (to make 100% sure water does not run down the outside of the cable and into the mag) and you should be able to plow on regardless of a bit of rain, unless your jacket leaks of courseHarry44 wrote:.

Water can also seep into the plug lead connector and conduct the spark along the water on the plug lead. I've seen it like dash dash morse code in the dark running along the plug lead. Instead of via the wire inside to the plug.

Re: 1957 18S
Thanks for the advice guys.
I've fitted a new copper lead and non resistor plug cap and siliconed the pick up where it fits to the magneto and where the new lead goes into the pick up. Also as suggested the A/R cable.
Time and the weather will tell.
Cheers Harry
