1964-on speedo drive

Post by JEAN-NOEL »

Hello,
I am confused about speedo drive suitable for my bike. According parts list 1963/64, in 64, for all the range except 350 Comp and 500 CS part number is 022888. My speedo drive, in very good order is stamped BG 5330/168 - Ratio 15/12°. Part number is the same for MPH or KPH speedo heads. When I bought my bike it had a Veglia speedo, so I got a Smiths Magnetic, fully reconditionned : SSM 5001/04A 1000 - (0/190 KPH).
I have been in touch with A. Gagg & Sons for a suitable gearbox tacho drive (solved) and asked them about compatibility of my speedo and my speedo drive. They said me the ratio must be 2/1, and they offer a Triumph made speedo drive.
Could someone tell me what are the Smiths's original ref number for the 022888 item ?
Is my speedo head O.K. for the year and make ?
I am really confused, as I don't want to swap a good original part for a replica or one of an other brand.
Kind regards. J.N.

In the archives:

It's hard to read but it looks like BG 5330/257

Hi.

The speedo head no for a 1965 G12 CSR is SSM.3002/00A for mph and SSM.3002/01A for kph. I think the gearbox should be BG 5330/257, text is a bit fuzzy.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dave & Harry,
thank you for your replies.
One good thing : my tacho, 3003/00 is the right one.
My speedo is SSM 5001 instead of 3002. But il looks exactly the same, and needs, so, 1000 revolutions per kilometer. The tyre circumference for a 3.50 x 18 is circa 2 mètres (1.9949 !) ie 500 révolutions per kilometer. Obviously the good ratio is 2/1. Now I have to find a BG 5330/257, at least, a 2/1 ratio vith the suitable hole (I think 3/4").
The Smiths's catalogue is very interesting as it states the exact cable length for speedo and tacho for each bike listed.
Kind regards.
J.N.
