The first part of the engine number is the last 2 digits of the model year it was made. 58 = 1958. The second part tells the model e.g. G2 is 250 Matchless, 14 is 250 AJS. Engines are the same accept the badge named parts. Some 250's were CSR models e.g G2 CSR, some parts differed between the two models. Same applies to 350 G5 Matchless & 350 Mod 8 AJS. Many parts differ from the 250's. If you check you should find e.g. 250 wheels are 17" 350 wheels 18" After the year and model part of the engine number, follows a unique number for that engine only, like your 877*** number. Your engine will be the only one with that part of the complete engine number.
The model year production starts September 1st ending August 31st he following year. This was done by most motors , motor bikes etc. to get new models ready for the London shows usually held end of October beginning of November. So 1958 model started production Sept 1st 1957. So it would be possible to buy a 1958 model, late in 1957.

You can only discover if you have a late 1958 by checking your number, with the number series for that year.
