John Surtees RIP

Post by Expat »

Haven't seen any other posts so far re the passing of the Great Man, so thought I'd be the first, or did I miss them?

No doubt many other members have their own thoughts and memories. Let's hear some of them. :)

Never had the chance to watch him in action but always thought that his talent must've been immense.

Why not knighted I've no idea.

Apparently a really decent chap who quietly encouraged young motor sport talent as well as a lot of charity fundraising.

A life well lived.

One of my treasured possessions is his biography that he signed for me. I have often wondered why he was never knighted but suspect that as he was such a modest man he would have been embarrassed to be called 'Sir' a title I am sure he deserved. Watching him race the M.V. at Brands all those years ago is a memory that still sends shivers down my spine, the sound of the bike and the sight of seeing the toe of his boot about 1/2 an inch away from the track every time he went round Druids bend. Just looked up his results in 1958 and 1959. First in every race he finished on both 350 and 500
Absolutely astonishing ...

The only time I ever saw him racing he was in his father's chair plus on his Vincent Grey Flash in the solo races.
