Re: Frame Question
You cannot mistake a 55 frame. That was the only year studs went through the casting into the oil tank. The battery carrier then fixed on the studs. Needless to say, battery carrier was 55 only, ID by it having a vertical fixing bracket not 2 tabs. I am sure the oil tank would also have a one off year fitting.

Re: Frame Question
55 rear wheel was a one off only, first year of the QD rear full width hub. BUT, no rubbers inside, just metal pins in metal holes. So complete wheel a one of, clonked and snatched at low speed from new. This meant a high non snatch speed, or change down a gear to make it pull.

Re: Frame Question
Rob i think my rear wheel must have been modified when the rims were renewed some 20 odd years ago as there is no snatching or clunking at all all nice and smooth pulling away /changing gear and so on
by the way what is QD ? i know what QR stands for

Re: Frame Question
if you compare the Parts List from 55 and 56, you can see they used the same rear hub both year, the hub with the rubber bush came together with the AMC gearbox

Re: Frame Question
I had never actually checked Paul.
Back in 1986 I got a 55 G3/LS. First time I had the wheel out I noticed it was not like the 55 G3/LS a got almost new in 1956. I mentioned this to a very knowledgeable member at my club section, he said it was 55 only. I took his word for it. Bit like 2011 Alterative Rally, I got a puncture in the rear wheel of my 63 G12 CSR. I was struggling to get the wheel out. An onlooker said, you wont get that out Rob its non QD. We live and learn Paul. Thank you.

Re: Frame Question
QD Matchless lingo ??? Both Matchless and AJS had quickly detachable, interchangeable wheels over 100 years ago. Note that's all wheels including sidecar that were quickly detachable and interchangeable. A side car could carry a spare to fit any wheel just like a car could. Not sure who was first AJS or Matchless.bjorn wrote:Re Shifter
