Wow great photos.

On a separate element, along the rod but opposite side to Joe Francis there was a car parts shop.

Driving a Bond 875 from Footscray heading for North Yorks I broke down in Eltham, coasted into a side turning. Linda aghast beside me. The car parts shop immediately opposite. Identified mechanical fuel pump (Hillman Imp engine) failed. They had new valves for the pump and new gasket for fitting it.

I did so and completed the trip.

Good to remember when you've been lucky!

Me too, living in nearby Bromley as a spotty yoof in the early '70's. Got an exchange rebored barrel and new piston from them for the Fanny Barnet 197, (Falcon?) I owned for a (very) short while. Broke a ton of piston rings trying to put it back together before getting the knack.

Seem to remember on an earlier occasion, getting the exchange barrel and piston deal for my first ever machine, the unforgettable Honda C50! from a shop in Elmers End near Beckenham, on the big roundabout there.

Just having looked on Google maps, it seems a shop very close by, if not the very same one, is Frank Dunstall Motorcycles.

Well, blow me down. Aaaah, those were the days :D

Ajsph,

In the centre of your first photograph of the AJS factory, there's a Fairy liquid washing up bottle just like the one I used to have as an apprentice. I reckon they were the thing to have then and came in handy to dispense the occasional squirt of cutting coolant oil/water mix on the old lathe or milling machine.

Anyone remember "Old Hoopers" in Hotwells, Bristol?
I remember Hoopers but he was then at Hanham by the maypole later sharing the shop with his son who sold Rally equipment.
There was L&Ds on the Bath rd and Charlies (Reg died last year) in Fishponds. Later there was Classic bikes (Dodgy Nick?) at Lawrence Hill, Bristol

In 2008 I bought the owner's (from new) 1947 Ajay Model 18 plus a large trailer load of every conceivable NOS AMC part from a dealer (Jefferys, Guildford) that closed in the 80's.

You've forgotten, Thrifty Peter, that I sold the lot years ago on eBay to grateful buyers as I wouldn't have needed them before I became a bag of crisps.
You did fit the spare 500 engine in your '46 though.

Dozens of parts were still labelled at your sort of prices. ;)
