G3 oil return - worth checking?

Having got my G3LS basket case together, I started it up and did the normal pre-flight checks. The oil return to the tank was a thin steady stream, not the mixed globules of air and oil one normally expects. While poking about I touched the oil return pipe and I could feel a heavy rythmic banging, the pump was obviously working very hard. To cut a long story short, it proved to be the felt in the filter where it had been turned over at the end, and this was blocking the entrance to the way out. Cutting the overlap back to around 1/8" cured the problem.
