I have also used Paul Dunn for dynamos and would echo the comments above-excellent.
I more recently used Tony Cooper (TC Motorcycles) for magneto repairs and dynamo as well. He too was excellent, quick, economical and a top notch job! can't find his address right now but will add it later. (it is already on the forum a number of times anyway)
phone number is; 0121 559 2405.

I use myself, with secondhand bits!I still find plenty of usable armatures at swapmeets, because most people dont know how to test them with a multimeter which i always take with me.

Just found Tony Cooper's address on another website. I haven't confirmed this though and I haven't been able to find an email or web address for him either:

Fax 0121 561 2410
I'm currently trying to decide between sending my magneto to Dave Lindsley, Tony Cooper and Independent Ignition Supplies. Dave was going to be first choice but then just got an email auto-response back saying they're closed for holidays until 19th Sept. I'll try and give Tony a call later today...
Another couple of contact details for the record whilst I have these to hand:
Independent Ignition Supplies
PO Box 129, Bideford, EX39 9AE, England
Tel 01237 475 986
Fax 01237 475 986

Update: Just had an email back from Mike Green at the above company to say that they no longer undertake magneto repairs, instead specialising in spare parts. He recommended I contact Geoff Batty of Ribblesdale Auto Electrics on g.batty@dsl.pipex.co.uk

for those in the south of England,
Steve Marks, Westdowne, Saltmarsh Lane, Downash Hailsham E.Sussex, 01323 840203
steve@themagnetoguys.co.uk, hav'nt used him but if the Henderson 4 he had on the Ballard rally in France this year which he had rebuilt is anything to judge his work by, then it will be bloody good, kind regards.

Got both my E3NL dynamo and N1 magneto back from Tony Cooper and just refitted both to my bike. Big fat blue spark from the mag and lots of volts coming from the dynamo and both units cleaned up as new.
First rate service, fast turn around, very knowledgeable and helpful - highly recommended. (Plus a fir bit cheaper than other quotes I received!)

Yes,Jim, but does the spark still exist after the
machine reaches operating temperature or is it only good for a trip down the road to the pub and back (after sitting an hour or two)?
The big weakness with these old mags is that the windings break down and short across the wires after they get warm. The only good test is on the machine running for an hour or two with a few stops here and there to see if it will start.

Yep, pleased to report that my Tony Cooper serviced magnet still giving a nice big fat blue spark (or at least I assume that's what it looked like!) after a two-up ride to the Chinese border and back. I'm sure it must have been well up to operating temperature in the sweltering HK heat and humidity - I certainly was!

Re: Dynamos and Magnetos
Just about to send my my "old" just collapsed SR1 mag to TONY COOPER (see above posts). He did my dynamo for me 2/3 years back after I just couldn't separate the armature from the bearing without doing harrm; still going great.
And a 2 year guarantee on the mag. a FULL JOB ABOUT £120 todays prices. Purists will object to his fitting studs in place of the screws for the cover, but the screws can be a pain to locate; you can always say no to the studs.

Tel 0121 559 2405
Fax 0121 561 2410
And he'll reverse direction on one of my "spare" mags which runs nicely but wrong way.
Going to fit on the remaining spare SR1, nice spark, rough bearings, to keep me going.
Note that I got a touch of the Rex Webb on the capitals!
